Knew I’d seen this sentiment somewhere before. Check out the first sentence of 
the preface to Wittgenstein's Tractatus [1]:

    This book will perhaps only be understood by those who have 
    themselves already thought the thoughts which are expressed
    in it - or similar thoughts.

You’re in good company, Henry (or not; depends on who you ask).
