I do not know what you mean by "the really attractive apps" but there are quite a lot of examples of widely used apps which did not follow this path. That said, I'll note a few things: (1) Most apps never get seen by most people. This is because there are so many apps. (2) The "app market" itself probably has more in common with the fashion industry's market than with, for example, a market for manufactured goods. (3) This thread probably should have moved to the chat forum. (4) The current j iOS app feels like a [highly?] modified jhs variant. (5) It would be interesting, I imagine, to see some examples of your swift facade sort of approach.
