We can choose what to be consistent with. = assumes that two infinities are the 'same' infinity. + does not (which is made more clear if you try e.g. _+__ or _-_). It is probably insensible to make + and = consistent with each other, but it may be sensible to make = more consistent with itself.

I think a problem here is that infinity is inconsistent.
