Since you have a C background, be sure to check the published book "J for C Programmers" by Henry Rich (who currently maintains the J source code since both inventor Iverson and Roger Hui have passed on). It is available at lulu.com (supposedly free Ebook, PDF, 327 pages). Rather than the newer PDF, I have the original softcover version (J 6.02), and to me it's worth its weight in gold. Just be aware that it does not deal with the latest changes and improvements to J. But for learning J, you should find it VERY helpful!
