Dan - I can't install the latest version on my main machine at the moment -
I'll try it in a few days.

I see that I'm still running 6.01a - maybe the upgrade will help - I can
try it on my other machine along with the latest libraries.

This is not the behavior I get.  A few things to check:

    *  What version of J are you running?

    *  Can you update to the latest version of the library from
       http://www.jsoftware.com/jal/j601/library/ ?

    *  Do you get the correct results if you type  'is'&names_z_  ?

    *  If so, are you sure you didn't re-define  names  in one of
       your startup scripts?   Try typing   edit'names'  .

    *  When you type  names  in the IJX window, what is the definition
       displayed?
