First: Thank you, Devon, for the detailed examination
of +\ My understanding of the adverb is greatly
enhanced. I'm sure I could have gotten the same
knowledge some other way, but it was very nice having
the focus put on exactly the patterning I had
generated.
Raul mentioned, and I replied:

>That is a breakthrough concept for me.
In fact, it was nothing of the sort. Never mind the
details. I'm glad there's some leeway here for
'thinking aloud'. Such thinking can often be made up
of pretty poor thoughts.
I was on exactly the right track with my looking at
the removal of the conjunction as resulting in a hook.
If only I'd focused better on that idea! I grossly
misconceived what happens with a hook, somehow
transforming it into this monstrosity:
g
/ \
h h

y y
That is, I thought
tn 3
in this context
tn=:+/\>:@:i.
tn 3
6
matched
*/\~ 1 2 3
1 2 3
2 6 0
6 0 0
instead of matching
3 +/\ 1 2 3
6
The most important lesson for me here, I think, is to
obtain more uninterrupted time at the J console. So
much of my efforts occur reading printouts, for lack
of genuine session time. I think the 'newb' error
elaborated here shows that, while discussion goes
beyond what textual study can provide, even discussion
is no substitute for focusing at an interactive
session.
The next thing to do is wipe the egg off my face, so I
can carry on.

It is the central thesis of this book that the descriptive
and analytic power of an adequate programming language amply
repays the considerable effort required for its mastery.
