The script John put together uses the lapack addon for J described here

If you don't have the package manager installed and want to do so,
follow the instructions at
http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/JAL/Package_Manager

Once you have the lapack addon installed then you can follow John's
instructions on how to use the lapack addon to calculate eigenvalues.
