J602 betas are available.

This message to programming starts the ball rolling. Future discussion should be in the beta forum.

We encourage you to take an early look at J602 and appreciate your efforts in tracking down bugs, sorting out rough edges, and ensuring that the final release is a good as can be.

See http://www.jsoftware.com/beta.htm for installer downloads.

See Help|Release Highlights for an overview of what's new.

See Help|User Manual|J602 Install for information on the new Windows and Unix installers.

J64 (win64 and linux64) will be available in a few days. PocketPC won't be available until later.

The Windows release is for Vista and XP.

Unix users: you should be able to just download and run the installer. Please report problems with the download or if a chmod +x is required.

Windows XP users: please report whether you required the service pack discussed below or if there were any related problems.

The Windows binaries are built with a new MS development system. The previous development system was nearly 10 years old and Vista made this a good time to change. The new J32 binaries require
  "Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)"
to be installed on XP. Some XP systems will already have this installed. If not, the J602 installer tells you what steps are required. Unfortunately some XP systems have incorrect versions of this Service Pack and the J installer can't detect this and the result is the install completes but j.exe won't start. In that event go to www.microsoft.com and get and install the latest version.
