I guess what you are looking for is "atom", window os and other
libraries provide atom related api.  Google for "string to atom" 

afaics, global atom look up table is transient, and will discard when
program exit/reboot.

Also, if ms-exchange supports imap, what features are missing in ubuntu's
email client evolution/thunderbird?
