IMHO, mncode is probably the single most important J learning tool I could have. I will be your guinea pig if you will have me. This true novice will make many mistakes and help you with your debug/test cycle. I suspect that reading the mncode code, if it is comprehensive, will be as good a J tutorial as any that already exists.
