Oleg - in this case, I deliberately used a larger than usual scan to compensate for some blurriness in the scanned image - I don't want to tear up my copy of Vector, so I scanned a double-page spread which is harder to get flat on the scanner.
I usually use my old laptop which has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200 and I scan the images in at 400 dpi, then shrink them to 66% in an attempt to preserve clarity while getting the file sizes down. I've re-scanned some of the blurrier pages and shrunk them to 40% - take a look at http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/DevonMcCormick/JacobiByMcIntyre2 to see if it's more readable.
