I know nothing about xptic.. commands but yet I guess you have to pass a
rank-1 character string to xticpos. And it does not need box or open,

 pd 'xticpos ', ": ary4  NB. xticpos pos1 pos2 pos3...

This should print something albeit no ideal if the plot is correct or not.
