Non-real-time parts (e.g. paper counts from various locations)?
The answer here is basically yes. However, there are three distinct
parts, as I see it:
1) For internal/political use, would be cool to have the real-time
visualization of searches coming in. Might (or might not) be privacy
concerns to show searches connected with places...but could do it behind a
pw for admins, and allow others to see where searches are coming from, or
similar. This is a toy for internal use, but a toy that would
a) help us understand our impact and reach, and thus is useful
b) be cool to show to users (and funders), and thus is useful^2
2) Stacking papers up on places on a map. THis is a static image, no need
to be dynamic, just to visualize, roughly, contributions from regions of
the globe. Might not be perfectly accurate, and eventually one can
weight by citations, and get all the affiliations right, etc etc, but
could be done and shown around here to see how we are doing.
3) Endgame is combining all of this into a tool that users could use on
selected results to visualize things of interest on demand. This is less
likely to be of interest as I'm not sure the correct visualizations are to
do with the map, as much as straight numerical comparisons/plots, but if
the other two are easy/successful, we might consider it.

documentation include Google Maps overlays, the Google WebGL globe, and
endless infographic toolkits.
Yes again. Certainly 3rd party tools are the name of the game for 1&2, as
they aren't really meant to be integral parts of Invenio, or even INSPIRE.

long as we can generate static images for users without, anything is
probably okay.
See above. In other words, I think for toys like this take the easy road,
not the most compatible ubiquitous road.
