I usually append timestamps as a minor version number after the last
released version. Always increasing, always less than the next real
version.
i.e.
release 0.1
beta 0.1.12345678
beta 0.1.23456789
release 0.2
I have it scripted, but manually using 0.1.0001, 0.1.0002, etc. would
work just fine.
