thanks..  i did enter a bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=421010, and it's visible with
the Greasemonkey extension, as well, so hopefully someone will be able to
take a look at it..  there was another bug describing something suspiciously
similar but it was fixed 5 years ago..  if the code was re-written, perhaps
the old bug resurfaced.
