You are also do it proactively by listening for this event:
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Code_snippets/Tabbed_browser#Notification_when_a_tab_is_added_or_removed
for opened tabs. For windows, you can overlay browser.xul and use the load
event.

In both cases, you can keep a counter or boolean flag in a JS singleton
module.
