Is there a reason why you want to use the non-smooth DEM? For larger problems, other users have had good luck with this Chrono DEM implementation: https://github.com/projectchrono/DEM-Engine. It’s smooth contact though. It can specify a user-defined force that behaves as you describe. It’s fast, but requires NVIDIA GPUs.
