Are there any existing or proposed standards in this field? Are there any existing codebase that would start off as the initial platform for the project? Not that this is not needed, but my worries are that a new project, without any existing work to continue from, will be an endless bike-shedding exercise, as there are probably as many views on this as there are programmers. OSS isn't that good in defining specs. *I* would like to see some common ground first.
