Cracking down on such malpractices, the IDB has signed a contract with a Riyadh-based IT firm for computerizing the operations of the slaughterhouse. This facilitates online transmission of data to the IDB on the weight of each animal and the number of sheep sacrificed, Zulqarnain Ali Khan, CEO of Zultec, told Arab News. "Under the contract, our company has offered automation services for Haj services ranging from the Mina slaughterhouse management by the Islamic Development Bank to Hujjaj ID Card printing and tracking solutions for Tawafa organizations in charge of pilgrims from South Asia and Arab countries," Khan said. He said the Mina slaughterhouses are run by the IDB on a no-profit, no-loss basis. These slaughterhouses work 24 hours a day for five days during the Haj period when over two million animals are slaughtered as offerings by the pilgrims. "The sensitivity of the event implies that the IDB should not only keep track of the number of animals slaughtered but also that the animals sacrificed should match the minimum acceptable weight set by the bank. Zultec has provided a complete automated solution for the counting and weighing of the animals whereby the bank gets precise reports during the course of Haj," he said. This year more than 18,000 butchers have been deployed along with 700 veterinarians and 600 Shariah students. The animals will be examined at all stages until they are skinned and refrigerated. The IDB undertakes the distribution of sacrificial meat among the poor in the Makkah area. Large quantities are transported by land, air and sea for distribution to member countries and the poor worldwide. This year some 629,600 animals will be distributed in 23 countries as opposed to 593,000 last year, reflecting the increase in the number of pilgrims performing Haj. The aim of the IDB program, which has been in operation since 1983, is the maximum utilization of sacrificial animals, their skins and offal. To this end, a contract has been signed with a Chinese company for the production of gelatin. The gelatin plant will also address another important issue for Muslims - offering an alternative solution to the consumers of gelatin produced from pork, which currently dominates the world markets.
