http://arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article572330.ece 300 KSA cases of faulty implants being probed By ARAB NEWS Published: Feb 8, 2012 02:25 Updated: Feb 8, 2012 02:25 RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) is currently investigating more than 300 cases of women in the Kingdom that have undergone breast augmentation using silicon implants that were produced by a French company called “Poly Implant Prothese” or PIP, which has been shut down in 2010, business daily Al-Eqtisadiah found out on Tuesday. According to Al-Eqtisadiah resources, this procedure had been performed in 20 hospitals and clinics around the country. The SFDA also found out during their investigations that a local company that works in the field of medical supplies and products had imported these silicon implants by express mail from 2006 until 2009 and had distributed quantities to several hospitals and clinics throughout the Kingdom. Alarming news about the silicon implants produced by this company has created global panic and condemnation, since it was discovered that these implants could rupture and cause the gel inside to leak into women’s bodies, causing great harm and infections. The SFDA has since collaborated with surgeons and hospitals that have used this potentially harmful product on their clients and now offer breast implant removal free of charge to those women who had the procedure using these PIP implants. Dr. Saleh bin Sulaiman Al-Tayyar, executive vice president of the Gaza Medical Equipment and Products, said that the authority had implemented a number of actions to address the situation, including the establishment of a center to receive communications by those women affected, find out the names of medical centers and doctors who performed the operations and the period during which these procedures were done, and to make sure the type and quality of silicon used by surgeons and hospitals that performed these operations. Al-Tayyar also said that the SFDA would make sure that faulty implants would be replaced with better and safer quality implants to women free of charge, urging those who have had the procedure to contact the authority on this email account: m...@sfda.gov.sa, or by phone: 014709340. A local plastic surgeon who asked to remain anonymous informed Arab News that many women had already had the implant removal procedure that was made by the French company, and that there had been no side effects. He also said that the offending silicon was made from a low-grade artificial gel, which has actually not yet been proven to cause cancer or not. The medical scare started when the French authorities shut down the company that produced these silicon implants and arrested its CEO in 2010, after which the product was removed from the French market. By then, PIP had already exported this faulty product to over 65 countries, 50 percent of which – or 100,000 implants annually – were sent to South American countries, mainly Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina.
