Indonesia has sentenced the former treasurer of President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono's Democrat Party to four years and 10 months in prison after
finding him guilty on corruption charges.

The country's anti-corruption court found that Muhammad Nazaruddin had
taken 4.68 billion rupiah ($A490,000) in bribes, Judge Dharmawati Ningsih
said in Jakarta. Nazaruddin was also fined 200 million rupiah, she said.

The conviction comes as Mr Yudhoyono struggles to recover from falling
support after Nazaruddin's arrest in August and his failure last month to
push a fuel price increase through parliament. Nazaruddin was on trial
over alleged corruption involving building projects for the South-east
Asian Games.

''This provides a sense that the President has some control over the
Democrat Party and more importantly it highlights his commitment to the
anti-corruption struggle,'' said Leonard Sebastian, an associate professor
at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. ''People will see
this as a step forward but they will want to see more done.''

Mr Yudhoyono won a second five-year term with 61 per cent of the vote in
2009 on vows to boost growth, double infrastructure spending and clean up
graft. A poll by Indonesian Survey Circle published in February, the most
recently released, showed 48.3 per cent of respondents approved of his
performance, down from 56.7 per cent in January 2011.

Legislators rejected the government's bid for 33 per cent rise in the
price of subsidised fuel, instead giving it the power to raise prices only
if the Indonesia crude price exceeds the budget assumption of $101 a
barrel by an average 15 per cent in a six-month period.
