An Indonesian navy ship fired on a Chinese fishing boat, killing one crewman
and injuring two others, the navy said Wednesday.

The incident occurred Monday in the Arafura Sea, when the navy vessel came
across four boats believed to be fishing illegally, the Jakarta Post
reported.

Three of the boats fled safely. The navy ship hailed the fourth, which bore
a Chinese flag, and fired three shots in the air after it failed to respond
and appeared to be attempting to flee, a navy spokesman said.

When the fishing boat still did not respond, the ship fired a gun into its
side, intending to damage the rotor, the spokesman said. The dead and
wounded were discovered when sailors boarded the fishing boat.

The ship and crew were all taken to a naval base in the eastern province of
Papua.

The Chinese Embassy in Jakarta said Wednesday it had been informed of the
incident and was confirming the details.
