Afghan 'rebel attacks' kill nine Suspected Taleban rebels have killed seven police officers in an ambush in Afghanistan, while two civilians were beheaded in a separate attack. The police were fired on as they drove towards the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, a local governor said.
The civilians were abducted on Monday from a village in the southern province of Uruzgan and their bodies found two days later, Jan Mohammed Khan added. Security forces raided a rebel camp in the area and made two arrests, he said. More than 1,400 people have died in Afghanistan this year as a result of violence linked to the intensified Taleban-led insurgency. 'Police missing' The attack on the police convoy, in which two vehicles were reportedly destroyed by rockets, took place on Wednesday. It was the latest in a series to target the country's fledgling police force. "Seven police were killed on the spot and two are missing," Governor Mohammad Khan told the AFP news agency. A spokesman for the Taleban, Qari Yousuf, said they carried out the attack. In the other incident in which two villagers were beheaded, the rebels mistakenly thought they were working as interpreters for the US-led coalition forces, the governor told the Associated Press news agency. Eastern and southern provinces of Afghanistan have been the scene of increasing attacks by insurgents in recent months. The death toll for this year is the highest since the US-led forces toppled the Taleban in late 2001.
