UN asks Indonesia to speed up naming its islands MANADO, North Sulawesi (Antara): The United Nations has asked Indonesia to speed up the process of naming all of its islands and to submit the names by 2007 at the latest, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Freddy Numberi said on Thursday. Freddy explained that of more than 17,000 islands in the archipelagic country, only 7,870 had been named. "By 2007, Indonesia will be obligated to give these islands names and inform the UN," Freddy said after visiting Miangas Island on the border between Indonesian and the Philippines. The minister said that the naming of the islands was actually the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs, but as it concerned the credibility of the Indonesian nation on the international stage, his ministry had asked local administrations throughout Indonesia to speed up the naming process. "This is a great duty. Don't wait for the central government," he said. He warned that a failure to name the islands would create difficulties for the country in international forums at a time when other countries were claiming some of the islands. Despite the slow process, Freddy expressed optimism that Indonesia would be able to submit the names of all its islands to the UN on time.
