CBN.com JAKARTA, Indonesia - While American conservatives have been dealing with what Hollywood dishes out for years, people halfway around the world in Indonesia are outraged by what they feel is an American invasion of immorality. Protesters are furious after Playboy, a popular pornographic magazine, expressed intentions to publish a local version of its magazine in Indonesia. "It defiles our culture, said one Muslim, it contains pornographic images and we don't agree with its existence. Yasir Sani, a Muslim and vice president of the National Student Movement, says Playboy will only agitate Indonesians who are weak in their faith. "This nation has a problem with having a strong faith, Sani said. We easily get influenced especially with something like this. That's why we need to protect our faith. Playboy has a publishing license, and is determined to publish the magazine in Indonesia. Congressman Balkan Kaplale insists that the issue is not the publication, but moral decline. Current criminal law is vague and insufficient to stop any pornographic publication. This is why the Indonesian government is revising a bill on anti -pornography and pornographic acts. However, the bill may not be passed until the end of this year. "It can be damaging to our society. Even if Playboy will get licensing, we will have them sanctioned on grounds of immorality," said Kaplale, chairman of the "Anti -Pornography Law." CBN News Asia tried to get a statement from Playboy, but the publishers refused to comment. The emergence of pornography is not new in the country. Even before the Playboy issue, the selling of pornographic materials was rampant. When you go to certain places in Jakarta, you can easily buy three copies of pornographic video discs for $1.
