Last update - 11:33 27/04/2006 Indonesia refuses to play Fed Cup tennis playoff in Israel By The Associated Press JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesia has refused to play its Fed Cup playoff in Israel and has requested the International Tennis Federation change the venue to a neutral country. If the request is denied, the women's team will have to forfeit, Indonesian Tennis Association deputy secretary-general August Ferry Raturandang said Thursday. "We cannot play in Israel," he said, noting that his country, home to some 190 million Muslims, has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Indonesia has long supported Palestinian independence. The ITF said Tuesday that Israel, which earned a promotion playoff as a winner in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I, would host Indonesia in the July 15-16 World Group II Playoffs. If the ITF refuses to move the venue to a neutral country "we have no choice but to pay a $5,000 fine and be banned for one year," Raturandang told The Associated Press. The two countries have matched up in the women's Fed Cup twice - in 1974 at Italy and at Japan in 1981. Israel defeated Indonesia on both occasions. Indonesia must win July's playoff to stay in World Group II.
