West Papuan People's Representative Office P.O. Box 1571, Port Vila, Rep. of Vanuatu, ph: +678 42601, +678 40808 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "EXPOSED: HIGH-PLACED INDONESIAN SPY in PNG POLITICS" Port Vila, May 5, 2006 In an interview with Radio New Zealand International on 25 April, 2006 (vide Pacnews 26 April 2006), the exposed Indonesian spy and well-known Papuan collaborator, Franzalbert Joku, availed himself of the opportunity to promote the official Indonesian line on West Papua. The West Papuan people categorically reject this man's statements which do not reflect the political reality in West Papua, the overwhelming majority sentiment of whose people is in favour of independence. The Indonesian Intelligence Service, known as BAKIN, has for some considerable time successfully planted Joku as an operative in the corridors of power in Port Moresby. Joku is a former West Papuan refugee who fled across the border into PNG with his parents in 1969. He is now a naturalised PNG citizen and is currently employed as Chief of Staff to the PNG Leader of the Opposition, Mr Peter O'Neill. Mr Joku's previous employment history in PNG included a lengthy stint as Chief of Staff and political advisor to the former PNG Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan. A regular commuter between Jayapura and Port Moresby, apparently with complete impunity, Joku has in the past also represented the Presidium of the Papua Council (PDP) as its Moderator for International Affairs. He held this position until his dismissal from the Presidium 3 years ago when documentary proof of Joku's collaboration with the Indonesian Intelligence Service was uncovered. In recent years, Joku has served the Indonesian Administration in West Papua and PNG in other capacities, principally on the Papuan Tribal Council (Dewan Adat) where he faithfully obeyed the beck and call of his Indonesian masters. Not only does Joku no longer represent PDP nor any other Papuan national organisation, but his close involvement with the Indonesian authorities renders him totally ineligible to represent the views and aspirations of the Papuan people in any form whatsoever. Ostracised by his own Sentani people around the capital district of Jayapura and even by members of his own family, many of whom are active in the pro-independence movement and have suffered as a consequence, Joku is thoroughly reviled by the West Papuan people as a Quisling. The fact that he is enjoying the benefits of being on two payrolls at the same time, namely that of PNG as well as Indonesia, is not lost on the people of West Papua. He is purported to own a mansion in Jayapura, said to be fit for a king, and to enjoy special Army protection whenever and wherever he is in town. If Franzalbert Joku has not yet come to the notice of the PNG National Intelligence Organisation, it would be wise for that body to do so as a matter of urgency. This man's continued activities in the upper echelons of politics in PNG (he once stood as a candidate for political office in PNG) can only represent a threat to PNG national security. The independent State of Papua New Guinea cannot and should not allow its independence to be compromised by harbouring an Indonesian agent within Government ranks. This could happen following the national elections due next year.
