It goes like this: Death is much better than living with a second wife. Husbands who have crossed this line from one to more-than-one wife have encountered problems with their first wives. Sometimes these problems end up in violence. Women have resorted to stabbing or burning their husbands in their sleep. Men have discovered that taking on more than one wife has a downside. Polygamy is problematic that way. In a report published in Al-Nadwa newspaper, businessman Khaled Al-Duwaish described the little wars that broke out between his first and second wives, especially when the two of them became pregnant at roughly the same time. In fact, he says, he married the second woman after failing to conceive a child with the first. After years of trying to have a child, the two agreed on the man taking on a second wife. But then, after eight years of trying, the first wife became pregnant. The two women then began exhibiting considerable ambivalence toward each other, enough so that the man had to separate his two wives. First, he separated the women in separate apartment in the same building. Later, he moved them further apart. But the distance wasn't the problem. The problem was the competition for the husband's attention and graces. "One day I bought a diamond ring for my first wife and I gave it to her as a present," said Al-Duwaish. "She had the nerve to call my other wife to tell her how happy she was with the new ring. She told her that I do not like her because I did not buy her one. The second wife went crazy and decided to make my life a living hell. Of course, I had to buy a bigger ring for the second wife just to please her and make her quiet. She was quiet, yes, but not for long. She called the first wife and told her how cheap her ring was because I bought her a more expensive one and hell broke loose again." Abu Fadel, a teacher, said he married a second woman not out of love, but to instill discipline in his first wife. Instead, the two of them wreaked havoc on the man. "They became women from hell. They turned my house into a battlefield," he said. "Everyday there was a problem and everyday there was a fight between them. One day I decided to make peace with them by taking them to the beach. Both of them fought over who would sit on the front seat. It started with a verbal fight and soon escalated to a catfight in the middle of the street." Fed up with the bickering, Abu Fadel left the two women arguing in the street, went back inside the house, and closed the door. After idealizing what it would be like to have a second wife, the honeymoon was over.
