Medicines, science books, sports equipment exempted from import

JAKARTA (Antara): Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has issued regulations
exempting medicines bought by the government, science books and sports
equipment purchased by national sports organizations from import duties.

The new regulations will be effective as of Oct. 5, a spokesman for the
ministry, Samsuar Said, said Tuesday.

He said the medicines must be bought by ministries or government institutions
overseeing health programs, hospitals or third parties engaged in agreements
with them.

Import duties will also be waived for science and technology books, general
textbooks and religious textbooks, but not imported books in the Indonesian
language, Samsuar said.

For sports equipment, the exemption is only for equipment imported by national
sports organizations based on the recommendation of the National Sports Council.
