Recognize ethnic Chinese freedom heroes: Observers

National News - Wednesday, November 14, 2007

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

A war veteran and academics on Tuesday praised the role played by
ethnic Chinese in Indonesia's struggle for independence.

An academic on the history and culture of Chinese-Indonesians from
the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Asvi Warman Adam, said
recognition of Chinese-Indonesian contributions to the nation's
independence would help Indonesians accept them as important citizens
of the nation.

"Every Indonesian should know that the ethnic Chinese fought
alongside freedom fighters from other ethnicities and some of them
deserve to be officially recognized as national heroes due to their
great role in the war," he told reporters during a break at a seminar
titled "Chinese-Indonesians' Roles in Supporting Indonesia's Unity",
held in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said naming a Chinese-Indonesian as a national hero would
significantly help erase negative stereotypes.

He also suggested the National Education Ministry start teaching
Chinese culture in all grades to acknowledge the contributions
Chinese-Indonesians have made to society.

Chinese culture was given a respected status when former president
Abdurrahman Wahid declared the Chinese New Year a national holiday.

Chairman of the 1945 War Veterans Foundation, Lt. Gen. (Ret)
Suprapto, said in the seminar he supported the idea of promoting
historical Chinese-Indonesian figures as heroes because he had
witnessed their contributions during wartime.

"I fought with them during the war and I have no hesitation in saying
these people should be named as national heroes," he said.

As many as 141 people have been named national heroes by the
government since 1959.

Eddie Lembong, chairman of the National Building Foundation, said
among those Chinese-Indonesians who had met the requirements to be
named national heroes was Rear Adm. (posthumous) Yahya Daniel Dharma,
also known as John Lie.

He said John Lie deserved a hero status because of his dedication to
the country, which was widely known.

John Lie was a sailor who smuggled natural resources, such as rubber
and other crops, to foreign countries in order to help the Indonesian
forces buy weapons. He joined the Indonesian Navy in 1950 and was
actively involved in numerous naval operations until he retired in
1977.

In addition to John Lie, there are other Chinese-Indonesians that
should be considered national heroes due to their significant roles
in society, he said. Among them are the late law minister Oei Tjoe
Tat, the late prominent lawyer Yap Thiam Hien and badminton maestro
Rudi Hartono, who won the prestigious All England eight times. (dic)
