Lottery Winners Give Away Millions This summer, Allen and Violet Large hit the $10.9 million jackpot and decided to give 98 percent of it away, reports the Halifax Chronicle-Herald. "We were quite happy with what we had and the way we were going," said Allen, a 75-year-old who worked most of his life as a welder in Ontario before retiring to Nova Scotia. "What you've never had, you never miss," added his wife, Violet, 78, who was undergoing treatment for cancer when they learned of their success in the July 14 Lotto 649 draw. "That money that we won was nothing," she said. "We have each other." The couple donated their winnings to a long list of groups, including the local fire department, churches, the Red Cross, and the hospital where Violet received her cancer treatment. The couple said they felt fortunate to be able to help. "We're the lucky ones," Violet told reporters. "I have no complaints."
