Gerindra, PDI-P Walk Out Over New Office Tower Plan
Markus Junianto Sihaloho | April 09, 2011

Two opposition parties walked out of a plenary session at the House of
Representatives on Friday to protest the House leadership decision to push
ahead with a controversial plan to build lawmakers a new office tower.

Legislators from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the
Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) left the session after House Deputy
Speaker Priyo Budi Santoso, from the Golkar Party, said there would be no
discussion over whether the plan would go ahead or not.

Gerindra has been steadfast in its opposition to the new building, with its
factional leader rejecting the plan during a House leadership meeting on
Thursday.

The PDI-P's factional leaders demanded on Wednesday that the Rp 1.13 trillion
($130 million) construction plan be reviewed.

The plan for the new office has been roundly criticized as an untimely waste of
public money that could be better spent elsewhere.

"We decided to walk out of the plenary meeting because we still reject the new
building plan," said Edi Prabowo, factional secretary for Gerindra.

The PDI-P's secretary general, Tjahjo Kumolo, said the House leadership's
unilateral decision on Thursday should not be viewed as an approval by the
House.

Marwan Jaffar, head of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in the House, also
accused the leadership of falsely claiming that all factions had approved the
project at Thursday's meeting.

"The truth is, the Democratic Party, PKB, PPP [United Development Party] and
Golkar asked for more evaluations of the plan before it was approved," he said.

He said the House leadership wrongly concluded that all but two factions
supported the project continuing, when seven factions had asked for further
reviews and two factions demanded it be delayed.

However, House Speaker Marzuki Alie, a Democrat, was adamant a majority had
supported the plan. "It's called politics. I won't say any more," he said.
