"They'll arrive in Italy on Saturday evening," the source said. Related Topics * Middle East & Africa * Air Warfare The decision by the UAE to send the warplanes follows an agreement on March 24 by the coalition powers to use the NATO command-and-control structure to enforce the no-fly zone and arms embargo against the Tripoli government. "It's very important to know who's in charge," the Gulf source said. The UAE's contribution is seen as a vital Arab endorsement of the Libyan intervention, following Qatar's dispatch of two Mirage 2000-5 fighters to take part in the air campaign. "The UAE air force has committed six F-16 and six Mirage aircraft to participate in the patrols that will enforce the no-fly zone now established over Libya. UAE participation in the patrols will commence in the coming days," official news agency WAM said, quoting UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan. Under the compromise agreement proposed by France, political control of operations will be vested in an ad hoc steering group composed of the coalition members and the Arab League. A first meeting of the steering body is due to be held in London on March 29. The command and control of Libyan operations has been a vexed issue as the United States wants to hand over as soon as possible the function. Although NATO is equipped with an integrated command-and-control structure, Paris refused to accept a transfer to NATO of political control as that was seen as offending Arab nations. French foreign minister Alain Juppé said March 24 the campaign to destroy the Libyan military would take days and weeks, not months. ------------------------------------ Post message: prole...@egroups.com Subscribe : proletar-subscr...@egroups.com Unsubscribe : proletar-unsubscr...@egroups.com List owner : proletar-ow...@egroups.com Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/Yahoo!
