Researchers find thousands of artifacts in Kota Cina, Sumatra The Jakarta Post | Sun, 05/15/2011 2:37 PM | Archipelago Archeologists have discovered thousands of artifacts in the Kota Cina site in Medan Marelan since beginning excavations at the site in April. "The findings include ceramic fragments, ancient Chinese coins, bones, beads, ancient bricks, chips from statues, seashells, smelt iron and strips of ancient gold plates," French Archeologist Daniel Perret said in Medan Sunday, as quoted by Antara. Ari Sadewo from the Medan Archeology center said that they would use the remaining week of the three week excavation period to examine the results. "The excavation shows the appreciation and attention of the international world, that is vital to uncover the historical and archeological mysteries of Kota Cina, which had important role in Eastern Sumatera in the 11th to 15th century," he added. The research involved 30 researches and assistant in a cooperation between the National Archeology Center, the Medan archeology center, the Medan State university and the Kota Cina museum. The site is in urgent need of attention from the local authorities to prevent it from being destroyed by modern developments, researchers said.
