Apakah sejarah masa lalu diulangi? http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/opinion/editorial-lets-not-neglect-eastern-indonesia/465071 Editorial: Let’s Not Neglect Eastern Indonesia September 13, 2011 It is no secret that strong consumer growth is powering the Indonesian economy. Most economists and analysts have pointed out that domestic spending now accounts for nearly 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. With the annual Idul Fitri holidays recently ended, it is conceivable that retailers and domestic consumer companies will enjoy stronger sales than last year. Automobile manufacturers and motorcycle distributors have already reported higher sales for the year. This is all well and good. The only caveat is that the bulk of consumer spending is limited to Java , Bali, parts of Sumatra and Sulawesi and pockets of Kalimantan . Eastern Indonesia has so far been excluded from this economic party. The consequences of such lopsided development are dire. While Java is doing well, eastern Indonesia continues to lag behind and is vulnerable to ethnic tension, as evident by the latest episode of violence in Ambon . By most every economic and social indicator, eastern Indonesia is underserved and underdeveloped. Clearly we need a plan to boost development in eastern Indonesia and strengthen overall economic growth. The government can start by building infrastructure such as airports, seaports and roads in the interiors of many islands. The people also need better schools and hospitals as well as other public facilities. Once all of this is in place, the private sector will follow swiftly by building factories, processing plants, malls, hotels and other economic underpinnings. Eastern Indonesia has been neglected for far too long. It is an area rich in natural resources with outstanding beauty. Its people are warm, friendly and hard-working. Unless the area sees significant economic development and progress, it will remain susceptible to social strife. The latest eruption of violence claimed five lives and injured 89 people, and while order has been restored, the island is far from calm. This region, too, deserves to enjoy the fruits of economic growth and give its people better lives.
