UNICEF highlights attention to children’s rights in Cuba

Iris de Armas Padrino

HAVANA.—José Juan Ortiz, UNICEF representative in Cuba, highlighted the
country’s political will in relation to the protection of children, which
constitutes an example for the world.

Ortiz affirmed that, from the triumph of the Revolution through now, the Cuban
state has dedicated much effort to the development of this population sector,
well before the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the
Child on November 20, 1989.

The UNICEF representative, who has held this position in Havana for five years,
reflected on the country’s efforts to guarantee this objective, despite its
limitations, while contrasting the situation of children here with the reality
of the lives of millions of children in the world affected by the food,
environmental and financial crises and wars, among other ills.

On the 22nd anniversary of the approval of the UN Convention on the Rights of
the Child, Ortiz commented on authorities commendable labors to adhere to
commitments in this context.

There is no violation of rights in Cuba, he emphasized, while also praising the
correct fulfillment of all the mandates established by the General Assembly in
1989.

The nation has fully demonstrated Cuban children’s rights and is currently in
the vanguard in terms of precautions around and the protection of children and
its completely free health and education services, accessible to the whole
population, are outstanding, the UNICEF official noted.

He recalled the guiding principles of the Convention, which include
non-discrimination, adherence to the priority interests of children, the right
to life, survival, to development and to participation. (AIN)
