If you look in the subdirectory where the files have been placed, you should find an incredible amount of "backups" of the DDB, and (possibly) some of the "raw" files. I would back these up to another subdirectory before proceeding. If you look at the time-date stamps, there should be at least one that pre-dates the disaster. You should be able to open at least one of these, which will recover the work up to that point in time.
Protel 99 seems to do this on the odd occasion, especially when several people in a team has been working with the same project. (Sometimes, it appears when somebody has broken the bookout rules for the file, or saved an old version over the later version DDB.)
