Hungary PM asks Romania not to open gold mine BUDAPEST, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has asked Romania not to open a controversial gold mine due to environmental concerns, but he promised on Monday not to veto Romania's accession to the EU over the matter. Canada's Gabriel Resources <GBU.TO> plans to set up Europe's biggest open-cast gold mine in Romania's Rosia Montana, but Hungary fears that environmental problems, arising from the use of cyanide, could spread across its border. Gyurcsany told parliament on Monday he had sent a letter to outgoing Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, asking him to stick by his earlier statement disapproving of the gold mine at Rosia Montana, as a cyanide spill at a Romanian gold mine in 2000 had devastated Hungary's second-biggest river the Tisza. But Gyurcsany called it "politically wrong and historically sinful" to threaten with a veto of Romania's EU entry and said he was satisfied with the environmental conditions Romania must meet before entering the 25-nation block in 2007. The EU gave Romania and Bulgaria the go-ahead to sign the Accession Treaty in April 2005, but both countries agreed their entry could be delayed to 2008 from 2007 if they failed to implement agreed reforms, including environmental cleanup. Hungarian Foreign Minister Ferenc Somogyi also said on Monday that the tasks awaiting Romania were "ambitious but not unrealistic," adding it was in Hungary's own national interest to help Romania's European integration. 12/20/04 12:10 ET Yahoo!
