looks like a hack to me.  Also,  with lazy fields you will either get it
wrong,  or will force its unpacking.
All in all,  and time and again, the implementor of the MessageOrBuilder
knows best from the internals about the default/empty state,  and it's very
easy to implement,  the opposite is true for the user of the class.
