I see this in Descriptors:
    public Descriptor findMessageTypeByName(String name) {
      // Don't allow looking up nested types. This will make optimization
      // easier later.
      if (name.indexOf('.') != -1) {
        return null;
      }
      if (getPackage().length() > 0) {
        name = getPackage() + '.' + name;
      }
      final GenericDescriptor result = pool.findSymbol(name);
      if (result != null && result instanceof Descriptor &&
          result.getFile() == this) {
        return (Descriptor)result;
      } else {
        return null;
      }
    }

Which is tantalizingly close, but it is limited to a single package.
Clearly it acknowledges the _possibility_ of multiple packages, but it
doesn't actually _support_ them. Is there anything I can do (other than
building my own map)? DescriptorPool is also private :-(

Thanks
john
