1.6.1 RC2 has full support for IE8:
http://prototypejs.org/2009/3/27/prototype-1-6-1-rc2-ie8-compatibility-element-storage-and-bug-fixes

I don't know the timeframe for 1.6.1 GA release, but I don't think
it's far off.  You might follow this thread over in the Core group;
someone asked the question there:
