I think that comment is a bit misleading.

Only if the the reader is a destructive one (created with
casefile_get_destructive_reader) 


     Is method 2 an abomination?

As I understand it, method 2 is perfectly correct and preferable to
method 1 (you don't have to store a possibly huge number of data).

Maybe Ben can confirm this.
