     This is a less of a problem than you think.  Some "make" programs
     understand automatic variables in implicit rules, but not in
     explicit rules.  
     
OK.  I wasn't aware of that.  Thanks for explaining it.
     
     I don't think we do anything fancy with Makefiles that would
     require the use of GNU make.
     

There's some things in Smake which I wouldn't trust to anything else, but 
that's not seen by users so I guess it's a special case.
