What about using minizip (http://www.winimage.com/zLibDll/minizip.html) along with zlib? It's really tiny library handling zip files for zlib. Example CLI zip/unzip programs for this lib have respectably 420 and 585 lines, along with comments. And IMHO implementing this is way better than 'zip' executable dependency. G.
