This is strange.  If any_reader_may_open was failing due to filename encoding 
issues, 
then I would expect to see the error message "An error occurred while opening 
\"%s\": %s.", 
from any-reader.c:56  --- unless of course there just happens to be another 
file whose 
name corresponds to the byte sequence of the intended filename when interpreted 
in the erroneous
encoding.
