     Just tested it successfully with pbuilder, don't know for sure regarding
     Debian's autobuilder, but seems worth a try (although i would prefer a
     solution without leaving the build dir). 

So would I.  But I don't see any alternative in the current situation.
     
Anyway, I pushed a change which should fix the problem.  

I've also fixed the problem with 439 & 440.
