I bumped the version number because a recent commit changed the ABI of the perl module.
This could lead to unexplained crashes if somebody used the old perl module with
the new library or vici-versa.

It looks like John increased the version number to 0.8.6 as part of a
recent change. The commit message doesn't mention why. It might have
been a mistake of some kind.
I think John is away for a few weeks, so I doubt he can quickly
explain. I might revert that change.
