i also think it was a better idea.
frankly speaking, not exactly loving the new look. but do not want to criticize
just because it is a change.taking time to try the new look. lets see what
happens after trying few days/weeks.

Oh, yes. As with older versions of SPSS, you must create
a variable before entering data. This behaviour was altered last
week, so in newer versions this restriction will not apply.
(Personally I think the old behaviour was good thing. It encouraged
users to think about the format of their data before blindly typing in
numbers.)
