I think that the ability to multiplex several streams (in this case
stdout and stderr) on a single channel, in such a way that the can be
separated at the other end, is rather peculiar to ssh. It has
certainly been done before, but I don't believe there's anything like
that in simple protocols such as rsh. Even if I haven't really looked.
