You don't specify a "gid=". linux/Documentation/Changes says:
: none            /dev/pts        devpts        gid=5,mode=620    0 0
:

Does changing this (and umount, mount) make a difference?

Thanks, but it's in the US - I don't want to take risks wrt the export
restrictions.
